New Year Begins with New Staff in Place

January 14, 2019 - Superintendent of Schools Dr. Verna Ruffin (standing) welcomed new staff to her Cabinet today, where the discussion immediately focused on student learning. New staff (or staff in new positions) include Dr. Gregory Rodriguez, Deputy Superintendent; Mr. William F. Clark, Chief Operating Officer, Dr. Tonya Biles, Supervisor of Pupil Personnel, and Jacqueline Davis, District Climate and Attendance Coordinator. Two CT State Department of Education officials helped provide guidance: Leslie Carson, Turnaround Office, and Ajit Gopalakrishnan, Bureau Chief of the Performance Office.

Filmmaker Documents Waterbury Students Learning to Read

Kindergarten Registration
  • All Kindergarten registrations will be processed ONLY at the Waterbury Family Intake Center at One Jefferson Square on the first floor.
  • Registration hours are from 8:15 am until 2:30 pm, Monday through Friday for children who will be 5 years old on or before January 1, 2020.
  • If a language other than English is spoken in the home, then the child MUST be present at the time of registration.

  • Todas las Registraciones para kindergarten serán procesadas SOLAMENTE en el Family Intake Center de Waterbury localizado en el primer piso de one Jefferson Square.

Dr. Ruffin greets staff as they arrive at the reception to welcome her to Waterbury Public Schools. 

New Superintendent Named

Dr. Verna D. Ruffin is the new Superintendent of Schools for Waterbury. The Board of Education official named Dr. Ruffin at its meeting June 28, 2018. 

Dr. Ruffin comes to Waterbury from a position as a Chief Academic Officer for the Achievement School District in Memphis, Tennessee. Prior to that position, she had served as Superintendent of the Jackson-Madison County Schools in Jackson (TN) and Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction and Area Superintendent in Tulsa (OK) Public Schools.

Educators of Year Announced

Thirty-one teachers, three paraprofessionals, one administrator, and one support staff person of the year will be honored at a ceremony at Crosby High School on Thursday, June 14th, at 4:30 p.m. The Administrator of the Year and the Waterbury Teacher of the Year will be announced at that time. Moving on to National Invention Convention

Caleb Smith, a 5th grader at Rotella, was selected to go on to the National Invention Convention in Washington DC on June 3rd.  We had 19 finalists compete at UCONN this past weekend, and we received two other awards, both to Caleb.  It was a great experience for the students, and Waterbury was well represented.

Testing

CMT Testing for grade 5 will begin on March 17, 2016. It is a one day test on Science skills and content. Science is important for all of us, because it helps us understand the world around us and teaches us how to explore our ideas and to investigate our ideas. This process of critical thinking promotes academic success for students as early as pre-k through college. Please encourage your child to do their best on the test. More content to explain the CMT science and Smarter Balanced Assessment to come.

Attendance

Driggs Elementary School believes that if the students come to school, they will learn. Our goal for average daily attendance is 94% but hoping to achieve 96% average daily attendance. Currently the average daily attendance is at 93%. We want what you want for your children-success. We know that life has a way to throw obstacles in front of us and we want to assure you that we are here to try our best to help you. If you are having difficulty getting your child to school, talk to us. We want to help!
