Congratulatory Tour

School Superintendent Dr. Verna Ruffin and her administrative staff visited ten schools "On The Rise" on Monday, March 11th, to congratulate staff and students for their exceptional work in making significant gains on the state’s Accountability Index. Dr. Ruffin and her staff boarded a yellow school bus at Central Office at 8:00 a.m. A second school bus followed with members of the North End Middle School marching band. At each school the band provided a rousing entry for the 20 plus Central Office staff who participated in the visits. Each school received balloons, a congratulatory banner, a plaque, a card, sweet treats for staff, and pencils for students emblazoned with the words "Waterbury Public Schools Shining Stars."

Wilson bulletin board salutes Congresswoman Jahana Hayes

Jahana Hayes bulletin board

Congresswoman Jahana Hayes called Wilson School Principal Jennifer Rosser recently to say she was moved by a bulletin board that paid tribute to her rise to elected office. Ms. Hayes, a former social studies teacher at John F. Kennedy High School who grew up in Long Hill, was the 2016 National Teacher of the Year. She was elected to the House of Representatives in November. She is the first African-American Democratic House member from Connecticut.

The students in Mrs. Parker’s class at Wilson created a hallway bulletin board that featured key facts and accomplishments of Ms. Hayes’ life. "The Congresswoman received a photo of the bulletin board, and she called me from her office in Washington, D.C. to express her awe and amazement," Mrs. Rosser said. "She said she is very honored and thankful for her Wilson roots. She said she hopes to visit to see it in person."
