New Year Begins with New Staff in Place

January 14, 2019 - Superintendent of Schools Dr. Verna Ruffin (standing) welcomed new staff to her Cabinet today, where the discussion immediately focused on student learning. New staff (or staff in new positions) include Dr. Gregory Rodriguez, Deputy Superintendent; Mr. William F. Clark, Chief Operating Officer, Dr. Tonya Biles, Supervisor of Pupil Personnel, and Jacqueline Davis, District Climate and Attendance Coordinator. Two CT State Department of Education officials helped provide guidance: Leslie Carson, Turnaround Office, and Ajit Gopalakrishnan, Bureau Chief of the Performance Office.

Filmmaker Documents Waterbury Students Learning to Read

Harvey Hubbell, filmmaker, is filming a documentary in Waterbury about the systems/practices we use to teach reading. This link will bring you to the first 7 episodes. They are only a few minutes each. 


Kindergarten Registration
  • All Kindergarten registrations will be processed ONLY at the Waterbury Family Intake Center at One Jefferson Square on the first floor.
  • Registration hours are from 8:15 am until 2:30 pm, Monday through Friday for children who will be 5 years old on or before January 1, 2020.
  • If a language other than English is spoken in the home, then the child MUST be present at the time of registration.
  • Todas las Registraciones para kindergarten serán procesadas SOLAMENTE en el Family Intake Center de Waterbury localizado en el primer piso de one Jefferson Square. 

  • El horario de registración es de 8:15 hasta las 2:30 pm, lunes a viernes para niños que tengan 5 años de edad en o antes del 1ro  de enero de 2020

Breast Cancer Awareness

Waterbury Public School students and staff raised $10,205 for St. Mary's Hospital Foundation's Breast Cancer Screening Fund during Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Student Selected for Honor

Waterbury Arts Magnet School is pleased to announce that Ms. Kaira Springer, grade 11, has been accepted into the 2019 All-Eastern Honors Ensemble Honors Treble Chorus. The 2019 NAfME All Eastern Honors Ensembles Group Managers received applications from the finest student musicians of the NAfME members throughout the Eastern Division. It is a highly competitive and difficult selection process, and Kaira will be among several hundred high school students chosen from high schools in New England, New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. The treble Choir will be conducted by Sandra Snow, from Michigan State University. The other groups will include an all Honors Concert Band, Mixed Choir, Orchestra, and Jazz Ensemble. The 2019 NAfME sponsored festival will take place in the Spirit of Pittsburgh Ballroom at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center in Pittsburgh, PA. Congratulations and Best Wishes, Kaira!

Dr. Ruffin greets staff as they arrive at the reception to welcome her to Waterbury Public Schools. 

New Superintendent Named

Dr. Verna D. Ruffin is the new Superintendent of Schools for Waterbury. The Board of Education official named Dr. Ruffin at its meeting June 28, 2018. 

Dr. Ruffin comes to Waterbury from a position as a Chief Academic Officer for the Achievement School District in Memphis, Tennessee. Prior to that position, she had served as Superintendent of the Jackson-Madison County Schools in Jackson (TN) and Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction and Area Superintendent in Tulsa (OK) Public Schools.

Educators of Year Announced

Thirty-one teachers, three paraprofessionals, one administrator, and one support staff person of the year will be honored at a ceremony at Crosby High School on Thursday, June 14th, at 4:30 p.m. The Administrator of the Year and the Waterbury Teacher of the Year will be announced at that time. WAMS Hosting 2015 CMEA Southern Region Music Auditions

On Saturday November 21st, the WAMS Music Department is hosting the 2015 CMEA Southern Region Music Auditions, from 9 a.m.-5 pm. It is an honor for us to be hosting, and we are busy preparing for approx 25 schools to be bringing their best musicians and singers here to audition for acceptance to  the Southern Region Music Festival, to be held in Middletown in January. This event makes it possible for them to compete on the state level as well. We have 21 students auditioning this year, as well as student assistance from the TriM Music Honor Society members.

Parents are needed to work in concessions, and clean up following the auditions. If any parent is interested, please have them contact Marianna Vagnini or Phil Sterling!!
