Dear Class of 2020, Parents and Families:
I hope this finds you safe and well.
As a District, we have been closely monitoring the COVID-19 pandemic and its impact, particularly on in-person events. After much thought and conversation, we have decided to honor the Class of 2020 with a virtual graduation ceremony for each of the high schools. We have made this difficult decision after reviewing guidance from the Office of Governor Ned Lamont, the state Department of Public Health and the state Department of Education. We are adhering to social-distancing guidelines outlined in several executive orders, including Executive Order 7N, which “restricts all social gatherings to no more than five people,” to protect the safety and well-being of our students and families.
While we are extremely disappointed that we cannot commemorate this milestone with a traditional ceremony this year, please be assured that we will celebrate our graduates with the pomp they deserve. School administrators and staff members from each high school have been devising a plan to hold a virtual ceremony on June 16th (Crosby High School, Waterbury Career Academy and Wilby High School) and 17th (Enlightenment, Kennedy High School, State Street and Waterbury Arts Magnet School) to honor our graduates and share their accomplishments with family and friends. Additionally, each high school will also be creating a virtual Senior Awards presentation according to the following schedule:
Crosby High School: June 10
Kennedy High School: June 8
Waterbury Arts Magnet School: June 6
Waterbury Career Academy: June 3
Wilby High School: June 12
We will provide more details regarding the time and platform soon on the District website and social media.
I want to thank you for your patience, understanding and flexibility during this unprecedented time in our nation and the world’s history. This health emergency has caused considerable disruptions to our daily lives and has led to enormous challenges for our students, staff and families. I am heartened to see us all support one another to manage this situation together.
Dr. Verna D. Ruffin, Superintendent
