Welcome to the West Side Middle School Music page!
The music department staff at West Side is dedicated to bringing your children an education in music that hopefully will be a life-long experience. Whether your child is involved in a performing group, or attends Music Appreciation classes, he or she will experience our commitment to excellence in music education.
Mr. Wilkas is the Band Director at West Side Middle School. Our proud band members will participate in this year’s concerts and parades. Mr. Wilkas also teaches 6th grade preparatory band classes, where your children have the opportunity to learn to play a musical instrument. Those students have the chance to advance their instrumental skills to eventually become part of the concert and marching band. In addition, Mr. Wilkas teaches Music Appreciation classes to students in the 7th and 8th grades.
Mr. Silva is West Side’s Guitar teacher. He teaches Beginning Guitar to 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students, and also directs two Select Guitar ensembles for advanced 7th and 8th grade students. Mr. Silva’s Select Guitar ensembles perform in the Winter and Spring concerts as well as other area and school events. His classroom is located in the technology education area, near the Gold House stairwell.
Ms. Horvath is West Side's Chorus teacher, with a choral membership of approximately 140 performing students. Chorus members perform in two annual concerts as well as numerous community events, including Waterbury's Gathering Parade held in May of each year. Ms. Horvath also instructs 6th, 7th, and 8th Grade Music Appreciation and General Chorus classes. Ms. Horvath's class is located in the Music Suite.
Miss Meyer is the World Drumming teacher at West Side Middle School. Students in 6th, 7th, and 8th grade have the opportunity to learn how to play various percussion instruments from different cultures across the globe. Miss Meyer also directs two performing groups, one for 7th grade students and one for 8th grade. These advanced ensembles perform at the Winter and Spring concerts at West Side, and are looking to explore additional performing opportunities in the community. Miss Meyer’s class is located in Room 162 in the portables.
