Commissioner Karen Harvey currently serves as Vice President of the Waterbury Board of Education. She is in her fourth term on the Board.
Harvey was born and raised in Waterbury. She attended Walsh Elementary School and graduated from Slocum Elementary School and Crosby High School. Harvey graduated from Eastern Connecticut State University with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and from Albertus Magnus College with a Master of Science in Management. Professionally, her career has been focused in the Telecommunication field where she held management positions at SNET (AT&T), Bell Atlantic Mobile and MCI WorldComm. She also worked in the banking industry immediately after graduating from college.
Harvey has been politically active since high school and was an active member of the community-based City Wide Youth Council in Waterbury while in high school and the NAACP in Hartford through college.
Harvey continues to be active in her community, serving as first Vice President of the Waterbury Black Democratic Club and on the Board of Directors for Granville Academy. She strongly believes that education is an investment. She has advocated for education in Waterbury for many years. She has been a recipient of many community service awards as a result of her work in the community.
