Spartans Claim CIAC D-III Crown in its Eighth Year as a Varsity Program
 

WATERBURY- Waterbury Career Academy (WCA) boy’s basket is the 2023 Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference Division III state champion. WCA Spartans, competing in only its eighth year as a varsity program, captured the school’s first CIAC title in any sport.

Kennedy High School Received Highest Rookie Seed and Rookie Inspiration Award

WATERBURY- On March 11-12, 2023, Crosby, Kennedy, and Wilby High School competed at the New England First Robotics Competition Qualifier. First Robotics has provided this weekend's results as well as honored Kennedy High School with two awards. 

Regan Elementary School is Named School of Distinction

WATERBURY- Regan Elementary School has been named a “School of Distinction'' for the 2022-23 school year by the Connecticut State Department of Education. The school of distinction recognition is given to schools in the top 10 percent of the state for their performance and/or growth as measured by the Connecticut Next Generation Accountability System. Waterbury is a member of District Reference Group (DRG) I, which includes: Bridgeport, Hartford, New Britain, New Haven, New London, Waterbury, and Windham districts. There are approximately 170 public schools in DRG I. 

Waterbury Public Schools Will Expand Maloney Interdistrict Magnet School to Serve 6th Grade

 

WATERBURY- Waterbury Public Schools is pleased to announce the 2023-2024 school year at Maloney Interdistrict Magnet School will expand and serve 6th grade students. Maloney Interdistrict Magnet School is currently a Pre-K through grade five school with 628 total students. Students attending Maloney reside in Waterbury and surrounding towns: Thomaston, Plymouth, and Wolcott.

High School Students Throughout New England Compete in an Energizing Robotics Competition in Waterbury

Thirty-nine teams of students in grades 9-12 from Connecticut, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire will compete at the NE FIRST Waterbury District Event, a FIRST Robotics Competition qualifier, the weekend of March 11-12, 2023, at Wilby High School. The event is free and open to the public.

Maloney Magnet School Receives the National Magnet School Distinction Award

WATERBURY- Maloney Magnet School in Waterbury has received the National Magnet School of Distinction Award. Maloney Magnet School will be recognized at the Magnet Schools of America’s 40th National Conference hosted by Dallas Independent School district, April 18-22, 2023.

Vision To Learn Provides Free Vision Services to BOOST! Glasses for over 170+ students at Duggan Elementary School

Waterbury Bridge to Success, Vision to Learn, and Waterbury Public Schools have teamed up to provide vision services to over 170 students at Duggan Elementary School, as part of the BOOST! Community Schools initiative. The vision services provided by Vision to Learn included vision screenings, eye exams, and the provision of glasses, all at no cost to the students. The students received their vision screenings and exams and will receive their glasses on Monday, February 27th, from 8:30 AM to 2:00 PM at Duggan Elementary School.

WPS developed the program in partnership with Varsity Tutors, a leading platform for live online learning, whose breakthrough products offer personalized live instruction via a customizable, all-in-one platform. The new program will enable students to access on-demand academic support 24/7.

Waterbury Promise and Post University Provide Resources to Aid Students in Selection Process

On Friday, October 28, 2022, the Academic Academy eighth grade took a field trip to several Waterbury Public School high schools to help inform and prepare students on their next year journey in selecting a high school. Waterbury Promise collaborated with Academic Academy to provide scholarship information and Post University provided students with a campus tour and sponsored the field trip lunch. 

Waterbury Neighborhood Council Awards Superintendent of Schools the 2022 City Service Award

WATERBURY- On Thursday, October 22, 2022, the Waterbury Neighborhood Council awarded the Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Verna D. Ruffin, the 2022 City Service Award. The Waterbury Neighborhood Council held its 22nd annual awards dinner at La Bella Vista where they awarded four community leaders with the City Service Award and the Good Neighbor Awards. The five recipients of the City Service Award are: Waterbury Police Chief Fernando C. Spagnolo, Reverend James M. Sullivan, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Verna D. Ruffin and Guiseppe “Joe” Pisani of Pisani Steel and the Naugatuck River Brigade, Police Activity League.
