WPS Students to Return to School in Hybrid Learning Model

Dear WPS Community,

I hope this continues to find you safe and well. For months, we have been engaged in preparations for the new school year, which is just a few weeks away. We greatly appreciate your patience, support and understanding as we navigate this unprecedented time in education together.

After much discussion, thought and planning, Waterbury Public Schools students will return to learning for the 2020-2021 school year on Tuesday, September 8. We will implement a hybrid learning model, which will entail in-person learning in the morning at the student’s school and a continuation of distance learning at home. For families who indicated that their child will not be returning in-person at this time, they will be offered the Virtual Academy option. More information regarding how to register for the Virtual Academy will be forthcoming. To review highlights of the plan, please click here.

Our decision is based on the conversations we facilitated and the enormous amount of input we sought from our families, teachers, staff and community as well as guidance from the Connecticut State Department of Education. These decisions come at a time of unprecedented developments due to COVID-19 and as we rethink how to address the needs of all students in a safe and healthy learning environment. Waterbury will move forward to ensure a high-quality education for all our students while ensuring their safety and that of our staff.

It is our intention to gradually increase in-person learning to a full day, possibly in October, as the temperature cools and students, teachers and staff are more comfortable in the buildings with no air conditioning.  This will be communicated to you as we move forward.

I ask for your understanding that the plan may change quickly based on community spread, health trends and frequent updates from the Center for Disease Control, the State Department of Public Health and others assisting with school plans in Waterbury and across Connecticut.

Throughout the summer, we have continued to design and implement a comprehensive virtual instructional plan in the event all students must return to full distance learning.  Instruction will remain student-centered and capitalize on the many strengths of our outstanding and dedicated educators.

Thank you again for your support. We are eager to welcome our students, teachers. administrators and staff back to school. Please visit our website frequently for additional up-to-date information.
