The Waterbury Public Schools’ philosophy in supporting middle school athletic programs directly aligns with the characteristics identified in the WPS Portrait of a Graduate, and mirrors that of the National Federation of High Schools (NFHS), which states:

“Middle-level education-based activity programs exist to connect students to the fabric and culture of the school. Our ultimate purpose behind education-based activities at any level is human growth and development which focuses on behavior, socialization, and self-realization.”

WPS is committed to supporting inclusive and positive learning experiences for all students and because of that, encourages interscholastic athletics in grades six through twelve.  The goal is to have everyone, including parents, work together and help all students realize their full potential.

Students in grades 6-8 are undergoing massive physical, social and emotional changes at this time in their lives. Cultivating, building and sustaining meaningful relationships that help young adolescents successfully adjust are not guaranteed in all learning environments; however, extracurricular activities such as interscholastic sports can help:

  • Enhance physical, social and emotional growth
  • Promote environments that build self-esteem and confidence through achievement
  • Develop effective communication and socialization skills
  • Foster inclusion and a sense of belonging
  • Provide purpose and incentives to attend school daily
  • Inspire a sense of pride and involvement within the school for all students
  • Teach individual and group accountability through sport
  • Improve motor skills and fitness
  • Prepare student-athletes for the demands of participation in high school athletics
  • Create foundational habits that support lifelong healthy lifestyles

Middle School Interscholastic Sports offered include Soccer, Cross-Country, Girls’ Swim and Dive and Girls’ Volleyball in the Fall Season; Boys’ and Girls’ Basketball and Boys’ Swim and Dive during the Winter Season; then Baseball, Softball, and Flag Football in the Spring Season.
