Talent Recruitment & Employment

Last Updated: 5/12/2023 4:52 PM

Waterbury, like many districts around the country, is faced with the challenge of increasing the representation of minorities in the educator workforce and recruiting and retaining culturally and linguistically diverse educators. With a student population that is nearly 70% minority, the district is committed to recruiting and retaining teachers of color. Waterbury is uniquely positioned to make significant gains toward increasing minority representation among teacher and administrator hires by thoughtfully creating and carrying out a fresh, comprehensive and multi-faceted approach. This approach includes a “Grow Your Own” next generation of teachers program focusing on high school students who have an interest in becoming teachers and providing professional development to existing minority teachers and having courageous conversations on topics of interest to them as they progress along their career trajectory. Finally, connecting with institutions of higher learning and establish relationships to support student internships and field experiences, while exposing our students to college life and expectations.
