School of Academic Renown (SOAR)

• SOAR families can save on the rising costs of college through students obtaining college credits through the University of Connecticut and Post University.
• SOAR students are offered 21 college courses through UConn and Post as well as 11 Advanced Placement courses.
• SOAR students are provided a positive atmosphere with high expectations for academic performance, attendance and behavior.
• SOAR students are afforded opportunities to participate in community service and extracurricular activities and are encouraged to pursue leadership opportunities.
• SOAR students are college-bound students who foster an interdisciplinary approach to produce well-rounded, civic-minded individuals.

• Frequent updates are provided to parents and families on student progress throughout the school year.
• Student conferences are facilitated multiple times throughout the school year.

Q: Who can apply to the SOAR Program?
A: Any Waterbury resident who is a rising high-school freshman.

Q: How is a student accepted into the SOAR Program?
A: There is a rigorous application process. Some aspects include:

• Academic Achievement
• Teacher Recommendations
• Essay
• Student Interview
• Demonstrated Leadership
• Community Service and/or Engagement in Extracurricular Activities
• Demonstrated Excellence in Personal Character

Q: How many AP/ECE/Post courses are offered through the SOAR Program?
A: 11 AP, 17 UConn ECE, and four Post courses are offered.

Q: If I am accepted into the SOAR Program, will I be a Kennedy High School Student?
A: Yes, you will be a Kennedy High School Student. If you are involved in interscholastic athletics, you will play for Kennedy.

Q: Will transportation be provided?
A: Yes, transportation will be provided for students enrolled in the SOAR Program.
